The Berti family has been making knives for more than one hundred years, since 1895. It all began with David when he opened his first workshop in Via dell’Oche in Scarperia, and the family tradition has continued without interruption ever since: David was followed by Severino then Alvaro and now Andrea is keeping the wonderful tradition alive. Remember though, producing knives just for the sake of inheriting a tradition is not enough, it is important to have been doing it for quite some time, just about a century!

The work of a sole craftsman. Signed with his initials. Confirming his craft and its value.

Every Knife produced at Coltellerie Berti, is the product of one pair of artisan hands. Whoever begins it finishes it. This is the essence of hand crafting in the Berti family, which since 1895 has insisted on the joy of possessing a real hand-made knife in the most authentic of artisan traditions. And so to declare it convincingly every Berti knife has the artisan’s initials cut into its blade.

Knife handle with metallic structure and simple spring. Certainly the strongest knife in the Scarperia production. Similar in shape to the Fiorentino, it differs in having a metal encasing inside the handle and solid metal heads making it indestructible. Faithful companion of the farm worker it has been used for both eating and working. Its name recalls the old French military corps the Zuavi, probably because of the type of blade often referred to as "French style" blade.

Handle: boxwood.

Total length of the knife: 19.3 cm.

Total length of the blade: 8.2 cm.

Additional description:

  • laser cut blade and laser cut spring: laser-cut blade with special steel plate, with a high carbon grade, offers great cutting power. Every blade has been tempered at 1055 degrees Celsius and sub-frozen at - 80 degrees Celsius;
  • simple spring in the Italian manner: it is a spring which makes the blade stable, but not fixed. To open or close the knife you must overcome the resistance of the spring, but this is not a locking device;
  • boxwood handle: this is very slow growing kind of wood which has always been used to make the simplest country knives, although one sometimes finds some knives with carved or sculpted handles. Today it is used for sophisticated production for people looking for a knife of their own which is poetic, humble , yet very beautiful in its elegant simplicity, with an ancient look, yet incredibly useful in modern contexts. An extra touch which makes this material fascinating is how it changes color naturally through time, going from an early yellow- orange to an even more intense and warmer hazel. Due to the scarcity of available material and the small size of box trees, only a very small amount of small-handled knives can be made.

Handmade in Italy.
